King Solomon
- Solomon was the 3rd king of Israel.
- Solomon was the 2nd child of King David and Bathsheba (David's wife).
The first child had died because of David's sin with Bathsheba.
- King Solomon was also named "Jedidiah". (2 Samuel 12:24, 25
And
David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her:
and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.
And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah,
because of the LORD. )
- King Solomon is known as being the wisest man. (1
Kings 4:29,30 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding
much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that [is] on the sea shore. And
Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country,
and all the wisdom of Egypt.)
- King Solomon built a temple for God that is commonly called "Solomon's Temple".
(See the Sacrificial System & God's Laws
Timeline.)
- King Solomon had 700 wives (plus 300 who were like wives to him) all in disobedience to what God had said. Most of these women were not
worshipers of the Living God and caused King Solomon to do wickedly. (1
Kings 11:1 "But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the
daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians,
[and] Hittites; Of the nations [concerning] which the LORD said unto the
children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither
shall they come in unto you: [for] surely they will turn away your heart after
their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. And he had seven
hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned
away his heart.")
- King Solomon's reign began with the God of Heaven then drifted far from
God, yet when his life was almost over he again returned to God.
- King Solomon wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes near the end of his life
calling things of this earth as all being "vanity". Then he went on to summarize
what he had learned by saying, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole
matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of
man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret
thing, whether [it be] good, or whether [it be] evil." Ecclesiastes
12:13, 14)

Among the many lessons taught by Solomon's life,
none is more strongly
emphasized than the power of influence for good or for evil.
However small
may be our sphere of influence we still exert an influence, one way or
the other.

Ecclesiastes
12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil
days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure
in them;
12:2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened,
nor the clouds return after the rain:
12:3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men
shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those
that look out of the windows be darkened,
12:4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding
is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of
music shall be brought low;
12:5 Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall
be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be
a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the
mourners go about the streets:
12:6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the
pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall
return unto God who gave it.
12:8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all [is] vanity.
