God's love can even be seen in the captivity of Israel
and Judah. Here are a few notes:
- Israel was warned before they were taken captive into Babylon. It
can be seen in the following text that God did not want Israel to have
to go into captivity and so they were given time to correct their mistakes and
escape the coming punishment that was designed to bring their hearts back to
Him. ("It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I
purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way;
that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin."
Jeremiah 36:3) "All His promises, His warnings, are but the
breathing of unutterable love." Steps to
Christ, page 35
- The Israelites were told to pray for the city of their captivity, Babylon.
("Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit
of them; . . . and seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be
carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof
shall ye have peace." Jeremiah 29:5-7)
- The captivity of Israel would last 70 years. ("For thus saith the
LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you,
and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place."
Jeremiah 29:10)
- Babylon was besieged by Cyrus, nephew of Darius the Mede, and commanding
general of the combined armies of the Medes and Persians. Cyrus made
Darius king of Babylon.
- Both Israel and Judah would return to their own land. Judah had
split off from Israel, but in God's eyes they were still His people.
(See the
People and Events Timeline.) ("For,
lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my
people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to
the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it. "
Jeremiah 30:3)
